Italy and the Balkans felt the impact of a record-breaking heatwave on Monday, with authorities reporting hundreds of excess deaths and widespread disruption to daily life across much of the continent for more than a week. The prolonged extreme heat has also heightened concern over the spread of wildfires.

In the US, the National Weather Service issued warnings about dangerous heat, saying temperatures would range in the 90s and lower 100s Fahrenheit across much of central and eastern parts of the country. The warnings were issued for the days ahead of July 4 celebrations.
