An Italian-led EU naval mission boarded the sanctioned tanker Toa Payoh, described as part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” on Sunday. The inspection by EUNAVFOR MED Irini took place west of the Italian island of Pantelleria while the vessel sailed from Benin to Istanbul. Italy’s Defence Ministry said the tanker was reportedly flying a Cameroon flag after switching registries only last week, prompting verification checks. EU forces gathered documentation but did not have authority to seize the ship during the boarding.
