Israeli firm used online ads to run vast spy operation, researchers say

Researchers say Israeli ad agency Discover-Tech used online advertising to track users and help surveillance firms hack devices. Its ads appeared across more than 120,000 websites and 75,000 apps, reportedly generating 10 million ads daily. Some were linked to Candiru spyware; researchers said it compromised 45 Windows devices at Al Jazeera between 2024 and 2025. Ads could enable tracking simply by loading. Google removed Discover-Tech, while IAB Europe suspended it and Comcast’s Beeswax dropped it. The company did not respond to messages seeking comment.
