NINEVEH, Iraq — Two Iraqi soldiers were killed and two others sustained injuries on Sunday, October 4, 2026 after an improvised explosive device (IED) left behind by ISIS remnant forces detonated during a security search operation north of the Rawa Desert, south of Nineveh province.

According to statements from Iraq's Ministry of Defense, the military unit was actively sweeping remote desert terrain to clear legacy landmines and track down insurgent sleeper cells when the device exploded. The casualties involved service members operating under the responsibility of the 27th Infantry Brigade of the 7th Division, attached to the Al-Jazeera Operations Command.

The explosion occurred in a notoriously rugged, vast stretch of desert connecting western Anbar and southern Nineveh—a corridor historically utilized by ISIS militants to conceal arms caches and maneuver between rural strongholds. Emergency medical personnel evacuated the wounded soldiers to a nearby military facility for treatment.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the blast site and initiated an expanded explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) sweep across the surrounding sector to locate and neutralize any remaining unexploded munitions.

"Military search teams are continuing field clearance operations in the Rawa Desert sector to eliminate hazardous explosive remnants and secure the region against sleeper cell movements," defense officials confirmed in an operational update.

Despite the territorial defeat of ISIS in late 2017, unexploded ordnance, hidden landmines, and insurgent sleeper cells continue to pose a significant hazard to military personnel and local communities in Iraq's vast desert regions.

Iraqi security forces regularly conduct targeted intelligence-driven sweeps across Nineveh, Anbar, and Saladin provinces to neutralize hidden explosive stockpiles and eliminate underground hideouts maintained by scattered insurgent elements.

The fatal incident underscores the ongoing challenge facing international and regional mine-clearing initiatives, as vast swathes of Iraq’s rural interior remain contaminated by unexploded ordnance. Defense analysts emphasize that until systematic, large-scale demining efforts are fully realized across these remote corridors, residual explosive devices will continue to threaten both counter-terrorism patrols and displaced civilians attempting to return to their communities.
