In a study published in Current Biology, a team led by behavioural ecologist Elodie Mandel‑Briefer of the University of Copenhagen found that the high‑frequency component of the whinny isn’t produced by the vocal cords at all — it arises from a kind of whistle made inside the horse’s larynx. When the animal exhales and contracts muscles above the vocal folds, there’s a narrow gap that causes the air to produce a whistle‑like sound at high frequency, while its vocal cords simultaneously vibrate at a lower frequency. In effect, the horse is weaving two distinct acoustic threads into a single, expressive call — a phenomenon scientists call biphonation.

What’s striking is how this dovetails with what we understand about vocal mechanics in mammals. Larger animals generally make deeper sounds because their vocal structures are bigger, and producing high pitches with those large systems is rare. Until now, only some small rodents were known to make laryngeal whistles, but horses are the first large mammals demonstrated to do so and to combine that whistling with simultaneous vocal fold vibration.

To prove this, researchers used a clever combination of visualization and experimentation. They slid tiny cameras into horses’ nasal passages to see how the throat behaved during a whinny and conducted imaging studies of the larynx in action. In laboratory tests, they even passed air and helium through excised laryngeal tissue — because sound travels faster in helium, a true whistle component will shift in pitch under helium while vocal fold tones won’t. As predicted, the high pitch rose under helium while the lower pitch stayed the same, showing that two distinct mechanisms make the two tones.

Just as birds or human beatboxers can create seemingly multiple layers of sound, horses produce this dual‑frequency call as a way of conveying richer messages to each other. Earlier work by the same team suggested the two parts of the whinny might help express separate emotional dimensions — whether something feels positive or negative and whether it’s intense or mild. By combining both a grunt‑like low frequency and a whistle‑like high pitch, a single whinny could carry nuanced information about a horse’s state or intent.

That such complexity lies hidden in a sound we’ve heard a thousand times reminds us how much remains to be learned about animal communication. Horses have lived alongside humans for thousands of years, yet only now are we beginning to understand the acoustic richness of their calls.
