Irupana Road Disaster: Passenger Van Falls Off Mountain Cliff in La Paz, Leaving Ten Dead

Irupana, Bolivia—A commercial passenger van plunged off a steep mountain cliff near Irupana today, killing ten people and leaving four others critically injured. The catastrophic crash occurred on a narrow, unpaved stretch of mountain road in the Yungas region of La Paz department. The intercity van drifted off the unreinforced outer edge of the roadway, tumbling over two hundred meters down a near-vertical rocky ravine.

The vehicle struck multiple rock outcroppings as it rolled down the gorge, completely disintegrating before landing upside down near the ravine floor. Local farmers and passing motorists deployed ropes to descend the dangerous incline to reach survivors scattered across the rocks. Highway police and mountain rescue units dispatched specialized rappelling teams to extricate victims from the steep terrain.

Paramedics confirmed ten passengers died at the scene from catastrophic impact trauma. Search-and-rescue teams extracted four severely injured survivors—including a minor—who were stabilized on mountain stretchers before being hauled up the cliff face. Helicopters and ambulances transported the wounded to central trauma hospitals in La Paz, with all four listed in critical condition.

Transit authorities launched an immediate investigation to determine whether mechanical failure, driver fatigue, or severe road degradation caused the vehicle to leave the asphalt shelf. "The outer shoulder broke away as the vehicle navigated a sharp turn along the cliff edge," reported Colonel Mario Flores of the La Paz highway patrol unit. "Narrow mountain passes in this sector lack guardrails or protective earthen berms."

The unpaved mountain roads connecting La Paz with the Yungas region are notorious for treacherous driving conditions, extreme drop-offs, and frequent mudslides. Local transport operators navigate narrow single-lane tracks carved directly into sheer cliff faces, where oncoming traffic often forces vehicles to edge dangerously close to unreinforced road shoulders. Heavy rains frequently wash away sub-base soil, creating invisible structural voids beneath the road surface.

Regional union leaders representing rural drivers renewed demands for government investment to pave high-risk mountain routes and install steel crash barriers. Police units temporarily closed the mountain corridor in both directions while emergency crews used specialized crane cables to recover wreckage fragments from the ravine floor.

Forensic personnel completed body identification procedures late this afternoon at the upper road edge before transport vehicles moved the deceased to the department morgue. Municipal authorities dispatched heavy graders to repair the eroded road shoulder where the vehicle left the roadway.

Traffic along the Irupana pass resumed late in the afternoon under strict police escort and reduced speed limits. Local transportation officials urged intercity transit operators to conduct mandatory brake and tire inspections before attempting high-altitude mountain routes.

Recovery teams concluded operations along the ravine floor as night fell over the Yungas valley. The transportation ministry maintains an active investigation unit at the crash site to complete technical reports regarding road conditions.
