Iranian political prisoner accused of conspiring with Israel brutally beaten in prison

Iranian human rights groups say an Iranian political prisoner accused of conspiring with Israel was severely beaten while in detention.

The prisoner, Mohammad Reza Morad Bahrouzi, was reportedly attacked in Qazvin Central Prison by multiple inmates. Groups sharing details of the case say he was left with serious injuries, including broken ribs and broken hands, along with facial injuries.

The reporting says authorities did not separate detainees according to the nature of their allegations, leaving Bahrouzi exposed to convicted prisoners and other detainees.

After the beating, Bahrouzi was transferred to a hospital for medical care. His family has said it is seeking an investigation into how the attack happened and into the prison’s handling of detainees.

In Iran, Bahrouzi has been charged with “communicating and sending footage to foreign elements, groups opposed to the government, and Israel,” according to the accounts shared by rights groups. His wife, also reportedly detained in a related context, has faced legal proceedings that her family and supporters describe as unfair.
