Iran Sentences 23-Year-Old Detained During January Protests to Death

Ilya Benrashid, a 23-year-old from Shahin Shahr in Iran’s Isfahan province, has been sentenced to death after being detained during January’s protests. The court linked the sentence to alleged damage to a health department building and also handed him prison terms for protest participation and chanting slogans. His family alleges he was tortured, deprived of food and denied legal counsel during early interrogations. His uncle told IranWire the verdict can be appealed to the Supreme Court; the appeal’s status and any execution date remain unknown.
