TEHRAN, Iran — Iran began a dayslong period of mourning for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei with ceremonies in Tehran drawing large crowds at the Grand Mosalla, where mourners gathered in black to pay their respects.

The country staged the event as more than a religious observance, framing it as a test of the Islamic Republic’s ability to mobilize public support during a sensitive political moment. Iranian authorities expected millions to participate, and preparations included broad efforts that would disrupt normal life in the capital as funeral events moved through multiple days.
