Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Says It Targeted Data Infrastructure Linked to Amazon

Iran’s powerful military organization, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has claimed responsibility for a strike targeting an Amazon-linked data center in Bahrain, according to reports carried by the Iranian outlet Fars News Agency.

The statement said the action was intended to examine what Iranian officials described as the potential role of certain data infrastructure in supporting military or intelligence activities connected to regional adversaries. The claim emerged amid heightened tensions in the broader Middle East, where digital infrastructure and technology companies have increasingly become part of geopolitical discussions.

U.S. technology company Amazon has not reported any new damage to its facilities in Bahrain following the claim. The company operates cloud computing and data infrastructure in several countries in the Gulf region through its cloud services division, which supports businesses, governments, and technology platforms across the Middle East.

Data centers have become critical infrastructure in the modern economy, housing servers that manage digital storage, cloud computing operations, and internet services. Because these facilities support a wide range of industries—including finance, logistics, communications, and government services—their security is often considered a priority for both companies and host countries.

Earlier reports indicated that drone attacks had previously damaged one Amazon-related facility in Bahrain as well as two data centers in the United Arab Emirates. Details surrounding those incidents remain limited, and the extent of the damage has not been widely clarified in public reporting.

The Gulf region hosts a rapidly expanding network of cloud computing infrastructure operated by global technology firms. Companies including Amazon and other major providers have invested heavily in regional data centers to support growing demand for digital services, artificial intelligence systems, and online platforms.

As a result, technology infrastructure has become an increasingly visible component of geopolitical competition. Analysts have noted that data centers, telecommunications networks, and satellite systems can hold both economic and strategic importance, particularly during periods of regional tension.

Authorities in Bahrain have not immediately provided detailed public comment regarding the latest claim, and independent confirmation of the alleged strike has not been widely reported.

For technology companies operating in the region, the situation highlights the broader challenge of maintaining critical infrastructure amid evolving geopolitical dynamics. As governments and corporations continue to expand digital networks across the Middle East, security considerations around data facilities and cloud infrastructure are likely to remain a key issue in regional policy discussions.
