Iran’s appeals court has upheld a 74-lash sentence against singer Parastoo Ahmadi over an online performance in which she appeared without the mandatory hijab. Lawyers said the court rejected the defendants’ appeal without holding a hearing, making the ruling final and enforceable. Ahmadi and members of her band were also given two-year bans on audiovisual activities and foreign travel. The case has drawn condemnation from rights groups, who describe flogging as cruel punishment and a violation of basic freedoms there.
