Inmates at three separate Guatemalan prisons have staged uprisings, taking dozens of prison guards hostage. This alarming situation stems from long-standing problems within the country’s prison system, including severe overcrowding, poor living conditions, and frequent violence among inmates.
The hostage situation reportedly began early in the morning, as inmates sought to leverage their actions to demand better treatment and improvements in prison conditions. According to official sources, around 50 guards are currently being held captive across the facilities.
Guatemalan authorities have deployed special operations units to manage the crisis and establish communication with the inmates to negotiate the release of the hostages.
