Ink, Infrastructure and Intent: Ghana’s Leader Reaffirms Support for Graphic’s Future

There are institutions whose presence in public life feels almost timeless — familiar companions to the daily patterns of conversation, information and civic reflection. In Ghana, the Graphic Communications Group Ltd. has long been one such institution, its publications and platforms woven into the country’s shared story. This week, President John Dramani Mahama offered a clear pledge of support to ensure this storied media house not only endures the challenges of a shifting media landscape but thrives as a vital contributor to national discourse.

During a visit to the state-owned news organisation on 8 January 2026, Mahama met with Graphic’s management and staff as part of a broader tour of public media institutions. Rather than observing reports from afar, he chose — as his communications minister noted — to step into the newsroom and dialogue directly with those at the centre of information production.

The President acknowledged that the media environment has transformed rapidly, with information now circulating at unprecedented speed. While commending efforts to digitise operations, he also recognised the constraints posed by outdated equipment and technology that have hindered the organisation’s ability to fulfil its mandate effectively. Addressing these operational obstacles, Mahama assured staff that the government — as the sole shareholder — will act to strengthen Graphic’s capacity to operate sustainably and competitively.

“In today’s media landscape, state media has a unique role,” Mahama said, noting that public broadcasting carries responsibilities beyond commercial pressures. He underscored the importance of coverage that may not always be immediately sensational but remains essential for public education and national development.

Part of his support includes plans to direct significant government printing contracts — such as textbooks and educational materials — to Graphic and other state printing institutions. This, he explained, will help bolster revenue streams and ensure that state media is not left behind as news consumption habits evolve.

Mahama’s reflections were also personal: he recounted memories of the Graphic’s presence in Ghanaian homes, where buying the newspaper was as familiar as reading the morning’s first light. This sentimental recognition was coupled with a strategic imperative — that a strong, financially stable Graphic contributes to an informed citizenry and a vibrant public sphere.

His pledge to support the organisation’s technological and financial revitalisation comes at a time when media houses worldwide — particularly state-owned ones — navigate competition from digital platforms, shifts in advertising revenue and the challenge of maintaining editorial independence. For Ghana, this support signals a governmental commitment not only to preserve a historic media brand but to nurture its evolution in ways that serve democratic engagement and public accountability.

As the newsroom buzzed with conversation following Mahama’s assurances, there was a sense that this is not simply a political gesture but part of a broader narrative about information, identity and shared responsibility. In an era where the speed of news can sometimes outpace reflection, the pledge to strengthen Ghana’s iconic press institution underlines a belief that an informed public remains essential to the nation’s evolving story.
