Influence Without Borders: A Presidency That Never Ended

Influence does not always respect borders. Sometimes, power travels farther than passports, shaping decisions and stirring debates an ocean away. Politico’s latest annual ranking places former U.S. President Donald Trump at the very top of Europe’s most influential politicians — a reminder that the currents of American politics continue to ripple sharply across the continent.

Body

The ranking highlights a paradox: Trump, who holds no European office, still exerts outsized impact over European elections, alliances, and defense strategies. His rhetoric, policies, and political tone continue to color conversations in capitals from Berlin to Budapest.

Just below him stands Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, followed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz — figures deeply embedded within Europe’s political structure, yet unable to surpass the influence of a leader abroad. Completing the top five are French opposition figure Marine Le Pen and Russian President Vladimir Putin, both familiar drivers of upheaval and polarization.

Politico’s list features 28 individuals in total, including prime ministers, presidents, and the chiefs of major institutions steering the European project. But it is Trump’s name that stands as its headline — a sign that Europe’s future remains, in part, tethered to the choices and philosophies emerging from Washington.

Closing

As Europe looks ahead, the ranking reflects a truth that is both practical and unsettling: leadership on the continent is not always European. Whether admired or resisted, Trump’s continuing influence underscores a global political landscape where boundaries blur and power travels far beyond the hand that holds it.
