Inferno on the Hill: Massive Wildfire Erupts on Gozo’s Gelmus Hill

VICTORIA, Gozo — A massive grass fire erupted on the iconic slopes of Gelmus Hill just outside Victoria, lighting up the Gozitan sky and forcing an urgent emergency response from civil protection authorities. The incident unfolded on Sunday, June 21, 2026, as soaring summer temperatures and parched vegetation created a tinderbox environment across the Maltese islands.

Firefighters from the Civil Protection Department's (CPD) Fire Station 6 on Gozo were dispatched immediately to combat the fast-moving flames threatening the landmark hill. As the fire rapidly consumed the dry brush, dramatic footage and photographs circulated across social media showing the scale of the blaze wrapping around the ridge.

In an unusual twist, social media videos also captured stored fireworks accidentally catching fire and detonating within the burning fields, creating a highly dangerous and unpredictable situation for the responding crews.

Firefighters worked aggressively into the evening to contain the perimeter of the blaze, successfully stopping the fire from expanding toward nearby residential properties or escalating into a broader disaster. A spokesperson for the Home Affairs Ministry confirmed that the prompt response kept the impact confined strictly to the hillside’s vegetation.

Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no injuries were recorded among residents or emergency responders. The CPD publicly extended its appreciation to the Malta Police Force and the Emergency Department at Gozo General Hospital for their logistical support and on-scene standby throughout the operation.

Following the successful containment, the CPD issued an urgent advisory reminding the public to practice extreme vigilance as Malta enters its peak summer season. "We remind the public to remain vigilant, especially during hot and dry conditions, and to report any signs of fire immediately by calling 112," the department warned in a public safety statement.

An investigation into the exact spark that triggered the wildfire remains ongoing, with officials looking into whether the blaze originated near the stored pyrotechnics or from natural causes related to the heat wave.
