Inferno on Calabar Highway: Fuel Tanker Crash Sparks Massive Fire, Gutting Nearby Shops

CALABAR, Nigeria — A catastrophic fire erupted along the Calabar-Odukpani highway late on Saturday, October 3, 2026 after a fully loaded fuel tanker carrying over 45,000 liters of petroleum product lost control, overturned, and exploded into a massive fireball that rapidly swept through neighboring commercial structures.

The incident occurred along a busy stretch of the interstate route—a major transport artery connecting Cross River State to surrounding regions. According to eyewitnesses and initial emergency reports, the tanker attempted to navigate a dangerous bend before losing stability, causing its massive tank to rupture and spill tens of thousands of liters of highly flammable liquid across the roadway.

Within minutes, an ignition source transformed the petrol spill into a raging wall of fire, sending thick black plumes of smoke high into the sky and sending panicked residents and motorists fleeing for safety.

The fuel-fueled inferno quickly spread beyond the highway tarmac, leaping across drainage channels to engulf adjacent roadside shops, market stalls, and residential buildings. Local shopkeepers scrambled to salvage inventory, but the speed and intensity of the flames left many with no choice but to abandon their livelihoods.

Firefighting crews from the Cross River State Fire Service and federal emergency responders were dispatched to the scene. Emergency teams fought the blaze for several hours before successfully containing the main body of the fire and preventing further spread to nearby residential complexes.

"The heat was overwhelming, and the flames moved faster than anyone could run," said a local shop owner whose store was destroyed in the blaze. "We lost everything within minutes."

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials have cordoned off the affected section of the highway to allow forensic investigators to determine the exact cause of the crash—preliminary assessments point to potential brake failure or road surface degradation.

Traffic authorities have diverted incoming and outgoing vehicle traffic to alternative routes while heavy equipment works to clear the charred wreckage of the tanker and restore safe transit along the vital highway corridor.
