Inferno in the Capital: Huge Blaze Tears Across Edinburgh's Arthur’s Seat

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND — Massive plumes of smoke blanketed the skyline of Scotland's capital after a major wildfire broke out on Arthur’s Seat, the iconic extinct volcano and tourist landmark overlooking Edinburgh. Emergency services rushed to the scene as the hill's historic slopes were gripped by fast-moving flames.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were alerted to the blaze in the open terrain at approximately 6:38 PM on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

Operations Control immediately mobilized six fire appliances alongside specialist wildfire resources to tackle the burning hillside. The fire quickly tore through a significant expanse of dry grass and vegetation, fanned by local conditions.

As darkness fell over Edinburgh, dramatic visuals shared across social media showed a glowing orange line of fire cutting across the prominent ridge lines of Holyrood Park. Fire crews equipped with specialist gear worked through the night and well into Monday morning to contain and suppress the deep-seated hotspots.

"Operations Control mobilized six fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene, where firefighters are working to extinguish a fire affecting an area of grass," an SFRS spokesperson confirmed. "There are no reported casualties, and crews remain at the scene."

As emergency operations extended into Monday, Police Scotland took steps to ensure public safety and provide fire crews with adequate space to maneuver. Authorities completely closed Queen’s Drive—the main road circling the landmark—and cordoned off nearby walking paths leading up the hill.

Because of the thick smoke drifting across surrounding residential areas, police issued an advisory urging nearby residents to keep their windows and doors firmly shut. The public was heavily requested to avoid Holyrood Park entirely while emergency vehicles continued to dominate the area.

This incident marks the second time in just three months that the historic peak has caught fire, following a separate large grass fire in Holyrood Park earlier in May.

While the exact cause of Sunday evening's fire has not yet been officially determined, environmental experts have frequently warned that the iconic park remains highly vulnerable to accidental or deliberate ignition during periods of dry weather. An investigation into how the inferno started is expected to begin once the area is fully dampened down and declared safe.
