Inferno in Lakemba: Suspicious Fire Erupts Beneath Sydney Furniture Showroom

LAKEMBA, SYDNEY — A major investigation is underway after a suspicious fire tore through the basement of a furniture warehouse in Sydney’s southwest early on Tuesday morning, September 29, 2026 destroying a ground-floor showroom and requiring a massive multi-agency response.

Emergency services were called to the multi-storey commercial building on Canterbury Road in Lakemba just before 4:00 AM following reports of thick smoke billowing into the street. Emergency crews arrived to find a deep-seated fire originating in the basement level that quickly spread upwards into the main showroom.

More than 100 firefighters and 25 fire appliances were deployed to combat the blaze as dense, toxic smoke filled the surrounding precinct. Crews faced significant operational challenges accessing the origin of the fire due to densely packed furniture, timber, and retail stock stacked inside the premises.

"The structural layout and fuel load inside the building made this an exceptionally difficult fire to contain," said a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson. "Firefighters worked aggressively from both the interior and exterior perimeters to stop the flames from engulfing neighboring properties."

As a safety precaution, emergency services evacuated approximately 25 residents from adjacent residential apartments and commercial buildings. No civilian injuries were reported, though one firefighter was treated at the hospital for minor burns before being released.

Canterbury Road was shut down in both directions between Halden Street and Dennis Street as firefighters battled the flames throughout the morning, causing extensive commuter delays across Sydney’s southwest. Local residents were urged to keep windows and doors closed to avoid toxic smoke inhalation.

Detectives from the NSW Police Force, alongside specialist fire investigators, have established a crime scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
