Inferno in Bangkok: Massive Fire Tears Through Local Repair Garage

BANGKOK — A massive fire ripped through a busy automotive repair garage in Bangkok’s vibrant Huai Khwang district on Saturday, August 2, 2026 sending towering plumes of thick black smoke into the sky and triggering a series of secondary explosions that terrified neighbors.

Dozens of firefighters battled the intense blaze for over two hours before bringing it under control, preventing the inferno from spreading to nearby residential buildings.

The fire began at approximately 11:45 AM local time at a large, multi-bay auto repair and spray-painting garage. Mechanics inside reported hearing a sudden crackle near the back of the shop, followed by an immediate wall of flames that quickly fed on the highly flammable materials stored on-site.

"We were working on a car's transmission when someone yelled 'Fire!'" said Somchai, a mechanic who managed to escape. "Within seconds, the smoke was everywhere. We tried to grab extinguishers, but the heat became unbearable too fast. We just had to run."

As the fire grew, the presence of motor oils, paint thinners, and pressurized gas tanks led to several loud explosions, blowing out sections of the garage’s corrugated metal roof and scattering debris across the narrow street.

Bangkok’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation dispatched over a dozen fire engines and heavy rescue units to the scene. First responders faced immediate challenges navigating the narrow alleys leading to the facility, compounded by the intense heat radiating from the structure.

Firefighters immediately set up defensive lines to protect adjacent townhouses, while paramedics established an emergency medical outpost at the end of the block to treat victims. Miraculously, local authorities confirmed there were no fatalities because the garage staff evacuated rapidly upon the first sign of smoke.

However, the blaze did cause injuries and significant property damage; five individuals—comprising three garage employees and two bystanders—were treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation, and more than 10 customer vehicles parked both inside and directly outside the garage were completely incinerated, leaving behind nothing but twisted metal shells.

While the fire has been successfully extinguished, emergency crews remain on-site pouring water onto smoldering hot spots to prevent reignition. Structural engineers have cordoned off the area, declaring the garage building structurally unsafe and at risk of partial collapse.

Preliminary assessments by forensic investigators point toward a potential electrical short circuit near the garage’s commercial air compressors or vehicle paint booth. A formal investigation into the facility's compliance with municipal safety regulations and storage of hazardous chemical compounds is currently underway.
