Inferno in Abuja: 3 Firefighters Critically Injured Battling Raging Filling Station Blaze in Garki

ABUJA, Nigeria — Three firefighters sustained serious injuries on Friday afternoon, August 7, 2026 while battling a high-risk blaze that erupted at the Shafa Filling Station before engulfing the neighboring Ahmad Plaza in Area 3, Garki, Abuja.

The inferno, which sent massive plumes of black smoke into the sky above the Federal Capital Territory, triggered widespread panic among residents, business owners, and commuters in the bustling commercial district.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out during routine operations at the fuel station when an unexpected spark ignited petroleum fumes. The flames quickly spiraled out of control, fueled by combustible materials, and rapidly spread to the adjoining Ahmad Plaza, where multiple businesses and commercial shops were forced to evacuate.

"We heard a loud pop followed by immediate panic as people started running out into the street," said a local shopkeeper near Area 3. "Within minutes, the flames jumped from the pump area to the side of the plaza."

Emergency response teams from the Federal Fire Service and the FCT Fire Service rushed to the scene to establish a containment perimeter and protect surrounding structures in the densely populated area.

The three injured firefighters were caught in a sudden thermal blast while attempting to suppress the core of the blaze and prevent underground fuel tanks from exploding. Emergency medical personnel on-site provided immediate trauma care before transferring the crew members to a nearby hospital for treatment of major burn injuries and smoke inhalation.

Disaster management officials confirmed that while the firefighters remain in critical but stable condition, their rapid intervention successfully prevented the fire from causing further destruction to neighboring commercial complexes.

Firefighting crews spent several hours dampening hotspots to ensure the area was fully secured. Police cordoned off the affected section of Area 3 to facilitate emergency operations and prevent looting.

The Federal Fire Service has launched an official investigation into the root cause of the outbreak, focusing on safety protocols during fuel discharge and station maintenance. Authorities reiterated the importance of strict adherence to fire safety standards across all fuel stations Operating within the capital territory.
