Inferno Engulfs Historic Dalton Mills in Keighley as Firefighters Battle Massive Blaze

KEIGHLEY, United Kingdom — A massive fire has devastated the landmark 19th-century Dalton Mills in Keighley, West Yorkshire, sending thick plumes of smoke across the town and triggering a major response from emergency services.

The emergency response began as flames rapidly consumed the historic Victorian-era textile mill, a building famous for its distinctive architecture and frequent appearances as a filming location for popular period drama television series.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service dispatched over 100 firefighters and more than 20 fire engines to the scene. Crews utilized aerial ladder platforms and high-powered water jets in an effort to contain the inferno, which quickly broke through the roof and upper floors of the multi-story structure.

Nearby roads were closed by local police, and residents living downwind were advised to keep windows and doors firmly shut due to heavy, dark smoke engulfing the surrounding neighborhood.

"The fire spread extremely rapidly through the timber framing and interior of the building," stated emergency response officials at the scene. "Our primary focus remains on preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring commercial properties and ensuring public safety."

Built in 1869 by Joseph Craven, Dalton Mills was once one of the largest textile mills in Yorkshire, employing thousands of local workers during the peak of the region's industrial era. In recent years, parts of the grade II-listed building had been restored for commercial use, community events, and TV production sets.

Community members and local heritage advocates expressed heartbreak as large portions of the iconic building collapsed under the intense heat.

Structural engineers and fire investigators remain on standby to evaluate the stability of the remaining masonry walls once the site is fully cooled.

Specialist fire investigation units have been tasked with determining the origin and cause of the blaze, while emergency crews expect to remain on site for several days damping down hotspots and securing the area.
