Inferno Devastates Pagadian City, Leaving Around 150 Homes Reduced to Ashes

PAGADIAN CITY, Philippines — A massive fire swept through a densely populated coastal neighborhood in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, destroying roughly 150 homes and leaving hundreds of residents homeless in a matter of hours.

The blaze broke out early on Saturday afternoon, September 12, 2026 quickly spreading through light, combustible building materials including wood, bamboo, and corrugated tin. Fanned by strong coastal winds, the flames rapidly engulfed adjacent structures before families could salvage their belongings.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) dispatched multiple firefighting units and tanker trucks to the scene after receiving emergency calls from distressed residents. Firefighters, supported by local volunteer brigades and residents using buckets, fought to contain the raging inferno and prevent it from spreading to nearby commercial establishments.

Thick plumes of black smoke were visible across the city as emergency crews navigated narrow alleyways to lay hose lines. Fire officials declared the scene under control after nearly three hours of intense operations, though crews remained on-site late into the evening to extinguish hot spots and prevent rekindling.

No fatalities have been reported, though several residents and firefighters received medical treatment for minor burns, smoke inhalation, and lacerations sustained during the chaotic evacuation.

Local government authorities, alongside the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), immediately activated emergency relief protocol. A temporary evacuation center has been established at a nearby covered court to provide displaced families with emergency shelter, hot meals, drinking water, and hygiene kits.

Disaster response personnel are currently conducting a comprehensive tag-and-map assessment to finalize the total number of affected individuals and verify property losses.

Fire arson investigators are examining the point of origin to determine what triggered the outbreak. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been caused by an unattended cooking stove or faulty electrical wiring, though official findings have yet to be confirmed.

Municipal leaders have appealed for public support and donations—including clothing, blankets, and dry food items—to assist the displaced residents as the community begins the long process of recovery and rebuilding.
