COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH — A devastating fire swept through the popular Tuputup Resto and Resort in the Patuartek beach area along Cox’s Bazar’s scenic Marine Drive, killing several tourists and reducing the predominantly wooden eco-resort to ashes.
Panic and chaos erupted among guests as thick smoke and towering flames enveloped the beachfront property during the early morning hours, prompting frantic escape attempts and sending shockwaves through the coastal tourist district.
The fire broke out around 7:00 AM at the beachfront resort near Inani. Constructed largely of bamboo, wood, and thatched roofing, the resort structure ignited rapidly, allowing the flames to engulf the entire facility within minutes.
Over two dozen guests were reportedly staying at the resort when the fire erupted. While a few occupants managed to scramble to safety, many were trapped inside as intense heat and thick, suffocating smoke blocked primary exit pathways. Distraught vacationers and onlookers stood along Marine Drive, wailing as emergency responders fought to reach victims.
Fire Service teams from multiple nearby stations rushed to the site following urgent distress calls from local residents and passing motorists.
Emergency crews recovered multiple bodies from the charred ruins as search-and-rescue operations got underway. Meanwhile, several survivors who suffered significant burn injuries and smoke inhalation received immediate first aid before being transported to nearby healthcare facilities. The ferocious blaze completely gutted the resort structure, leaving only blackened timber and metal frames intact along the beach.
Fire service officials and local law enforcement have secured the perimeter and launched a formal investigation to determine the origin of the inferno. Early assessments point to a potential electrical short circuit or cooking gas cylinder explosion in the kitchen facility, though authorities state that forensic teams will conduct a full review. District officials confirmed that safety audits will be conducted across all resorts and restaurants operating along the Marine Drive corridor to enforce fire safety standards and prevent similar tragedies.
