CHIPPING NORTON, SYDNEY — Around 130 firefighters are battling a massive, out-of-control blaze that has ripped through a commercial storage complex in Sydney’s south-west. The multi-alarm inferno has completely compromised the main building of the Storage King facility on Governor Macquarie Drive.

The emergency unfolded just before 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 when a fire broke out inside the large complex. Driven by highly combustible contents within the individual storage units, the flames quickly took hold, breaking through the roof and engulfing the structure. Thick, toxic black smoke began billowing into the air, visible across multiple suburbs in Sydney’s south-west.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) rushed to the scene, quickly escalating the response to a high-level incident. Crews from more than 22 fire appliances, including specialized aerial pumper trucks and ladder platforms, have been deployed to combat the raging flames from all angles.

As the fire continued to intensify and expand, emergency services moved quickly to establish a perimeter. Approximately 30 workers from neighboring businesses and industrial properties were urgently evacuated as a precautionary measure to prevent further danger.

A spokesperson for Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed that, fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries among staff, customers, or first responders.

However, due to the severe environmental hazard posed by the dark, chemical-laden smoke generated by the burning storage materials, authorities have issued an urgent emergency warning to local residents. Anyone living in Chipping Norton and downstream of the smoke plume is strongly advised to stay indoors, close all windows and doors, and turn off air conditioning units.

Roads surrounding Governor Macquarie Drive have been completely locked down by local police to allow unrestricted access for emergency vehicles and to maintain public safety.

Fire crews have transitioned into a defensive strategy, focusing their efforts on containment lines to stop the inferno from leaping to adjacent commercial properties. Heavy smoke and deep-seated hot spots within the collapsed ruins mean that firefighters are expected to remain on-site, working through the night to fully extinguish the blaze.

The exact cause of the fire is currently unknown and will be subject to a thorough investigation by specialized fire investigators and police forensic units once the area is deemed safe to enter.
