Inferno at E-Bike Depot: Massive Fire Breaks Out at Chinese Parking Area

BEIJING — A massive fire broke out at a crowded electric bike parking facility, sending thick plumes of toxic smoke into the air and destroying dozens of vehicles before firefighters brought the blaze under control.

The sudden inferno triggered an immediate evacuation of nearby residential structures as firefighters rushed to contain the rapidly spreading flames.

According to local emergency management authorities, the blaze began near a centralized charging bank within a densely packed e-bike shelter. Witnesses reported hearing loud popping sounds and series of small explosions as overheated lithium-ion batteries caught fire and ignited adjacent vehicles in rapid succession.

Within minutes, the high-density layout of the parking facility allowed the flames to sweep through rows of parked scooters, engulfing the metal structure and creating intense heat that scorched nearby building facades.

Multiple fire crews arrived on scene shortly after receiving emergency calls. Firefighters deployed heavy water hoses and chemical foam suppressants specifically designed to battle stubborn chemical and battery fires.

Rescuers established a perimeter, ordering residents in nearby apartment towers to close their windows to avoid thick black smoke. Thanks to the rapid intervention of first responders, crews managed to isolate the fire to the parking zone, preventing the flames from spreading into surrounding residential buildings. No serious injuries or fatalities were immediately reported.

Local authorities have launched a formal investigation into the root cause of the incident, focusing on potential electrical overloads, faulty charging infrastructure, or compromised third-party battery packs. The incident highlights growing nationwide concerns regarding battery storage, charging safety protocols, and fire hazards in high-density urban residential zones across major cities.

In response to the incident, urban housing administrators and local municipal fire bureau's announced plans to accelerate safety inspections across all residential e-bike charging stations. Officials are urging community management boards to enforce strict bans on uncertified aftermarket batteries, upgrade automatic fire-extinguishing systems, and move charging stations farther away from main residential access points to prevent future hazards.
