CHIRANG — A devastating late-night inferno tore through Dangtal Market in Assam's Chirang district, destroying more than 15 commercial establishments and causing property losses estimated in the millions of rupees.
The blaze erupted late on Sunday night, September 27, 2026 rapidly spreading through closely packed storefronts and primary structures across the bustling commercial hub. The fire caught onto several garment shops and retail outlets before a cooking gas cylinder exploded inside one of the units, violently escalating the blaze and sending plumes of thick smoke and massive fireballs into the night sky. Local traders and residents scrambled to salvage inventory, but the speed of the flames quickly forced everyone back.
Fire tenders dispatched from Chirang and neighboring Bongaigaon rushed to the scene to combat the escalating disaster. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours under difficult conditions before successfully bringing the flames under control and preventing the inferno from spreading to adjacent residential quarters.
No casualties or serious injuries have been reported so far, though shop owners have suffered immense financial setbacks, with entire inventories of textiles, electronics, and daily essentials reduced to charcoal.
While official disaster assessment teams are still quantifying the full extent of the structural and inventory damage, preliminary investigations suggest an electrical short circuit may have sparked the initial flame before the gas cylinder explosion accelerated the destruction. District authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess emergency relief measures for affected business owners.
Local business associations have urged the state government to deliver immediate financial aid and low-interest rehabilitation loans to help the impacted merchants rebuild their livelihoods. Speaking at the site on Monday morning, community leaders stressed that without swift administrative intervention, the economic ripple effects of the destruction could permanently destabilize dozens of families dependent on the market's daily commerce.
