Inferno at Camp Lapu-Lapu: Fire Breaks Out at Military Base in Cebu City

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Heavy smoke billowed over Barangay Apas on Wednesday afternoon, September 9, 2026 as a sudden fire broke out inside Camp Lapu-Lapu, the headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Visayas Command (VISCOM).

Emergency crews and local fire brigades scrambled to contain the blaze, which ignited during the heat of the afternoon, triggering immediate alarm among military personnel and neighboring residential communities.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Cebu City station received the emergency call in the mid-afternoon, prompting an immediate multi-agency response. Fire trucks from nearby stations—alongside volunteer fire brigades and military emergency response units—rushed through the gates of Camp Lapu-Lapu to establish a defensive perimeter around the burning structures.

Thick gray plumes were visible from several kilometers away, including high-rise developments in the adjacent Cebu IT Park. First responders worked frantically to stop the flames from spreading to surrounding office blocks and residential homes situated along the perimeter fence in Sitio Baka, Barangay Apas.

Military personnel stationed at the camp assisted firefighters by securing the area, managing crowd control, and clearing access routes for incoming water tankers. Initial reports indicate that the fire affected temporary quartering facilities and office spaces, though authorities have yet to release official estimates on structural damage.

As of Wednesday evening, no casualties or fatalities have been confirmed, though medical responders remain on standby to treat potential cases of smoke inhalation. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within an hour of arrival, successfully preventing the flames from reaching critical military assets or nearby residential zones. Meanwhile, Bureau of Fire Protection arson investigators and military officials have launched a joint investigation to pinpoint the origin of the ignition, with faulty electrical wiring listed among the preliminary factors being examined.

The incident briefly disrupted traffic along Salinas Drive and the busy corridors of Lahug as emergency vehicles navigated through peak-hour congestion. While the immediate threat has been neutralized, camp officials assured the public that safety protocols are being actively reviewed to prevent similar occurrences across the military reservation.
