BRONX, N.Y. — A massive waterfront fire erupted aboard a docked barge along the Bronx shoreline on Tuesday afternoon, October 27, 2026 sending dense columns of pitch-black smoke high into the sky that were visible for miles across New York City and Westchester County.
The blaze broke out shortly before 2:30 p.m. at a recycling and sanitation facility located near Boston Road and the Hutchinson River, in the Baychester neighborhood of the Bronx.
Emergency dispatchers received multiple 911 calls as a dark plume quickly dominated the horizon, drawing the attention of commuters on the nearby Hutchinson River Parkway and residents several miles away.
Firefighters with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) mounted an aggressive multi-pronged attack to contain the flames, targeting the vessel from both land and water.
During the operation, FDNY crews launched a dual-front attack to contain the flames. On land, firefighters deployed multiple hose lines and raised tower ladders above the vessel to pour heavy streams of water onto the burning debris, while marine units operated along the waterfront, using fireboats to blast water directly into the barge's hull to suppress the core of the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.
"Our main priority was keeping the fire completely contained to the vessel itself and preventing any exposure to adjacent docks or facilities," an FDNY spokesperson noted during the response.
Firefighters successfully localized the inferno aboard the 200-by-40-foot barge, preventing the fire from reaching surrounding facilities. No injuries to civilians or emergency responders were reported.
City officials advised nearby residents sensitive to heavy smoke to keep windows closed as crews completed residual overhaul operations. FDNY fire marshals remain on site to determine the precise cause of the fire.
As dusk settled over the waterfront, environmental response teams arrived at the scene to evaluate potential ecological impacts on the nearby Hutchinson River waterway. Officials confirmed that protective booms were deployed around the vessel as a precautionary measure to contain any residual runoff or debris generated during the firefighting efforts. While air quality monitoring in the immediate surrounding area showed safe levels by late evening, the site remains cordoned off as fire investigators continue sifting through the charred remains to determine the ignition source.
