Industrial Press Malfunction Kills Technician In Busan Manufacturing Plant, Triggers Labor Investigation

Busan, South Korea— A technician was crushed to death by industrial machinery inside a manufacturing plant in Busan on October 24, 2026, in what officials called a catastrophic failure of lockout procedures.

The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. on a press line that stamps metal parts for auto suppliers. The worker was performing maintenance inside the machine envelope when the press cycled. Co-workers heard a hydraulic hiss and then a shout. The machine had activated.

Emergency stop buttons were hit, but the ram had already closed. Plant paramedics could not free him without cutting equipment. Fire rescue used spreaders to lift the press plate. He was declared dead at the scene from crush injuries.

Police identified the victim as a 38-year-old maintenance technician with six years at the plant. He was working alone at the time, which violates company safety rules that require a spotter during intrusive maintenance. The spotter had stepped away to fetch parts, according to initial witness statements.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor issued an immediate work suspension for the entire line. Investigators seized the machine's control panel, safety interlocks, and maintenance logbook. A key question is whether the light curtain and two-hand control were bypassed.

A ministry inspector said, "We found the key in manual mode but the guard was open. We need to see if the interlock was defeated or malfunctioned." The Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency will run a separate technical analysis.

The plant operator released a short note: "We extend deepest condolences to the family. We will fully cooperate and audit all similar equipment." Union representatives said workers had complained about pressure to keep lines running during repairs. One said production bonuses were tied to uptime.

The factory in Sasang District employs about 300 workers and runs three shifts. It supplies parts to two major automakers. Orders will be delayed while the line stays idle, but the company said customer safety stock should cover the shortfall.

Workplace deaths involving presses remain one of the top categories in Korea's manufacturing sector despite years of campaigns. Data from last year shows 98 fatalities tied to caught-in or crushed-by machinery incidents.

The prosecutor will decide on possible charges for safety law violations after the technical reports are filed. The body was transferred for autopsy and the family was offered counseling and compensation guidance.
