Lyon, France— An industrial boiler explosion at a factory in Lyon left two workers dead and five injured on October 31, 2026, blowing out walls and sending debris across an industrial park.
The blast happened at 10:35 a.m. at a chemical packaging plant in the Saint-Fons industrial zone south of Lyon. The boiler was a 15-year-old high-pressure steam unit used to clean containers. Workers said they heard a hiss, then a sharp bang that shook buildings 300 meters away. The boiler room roof collapsed.
Fire service said two workers inside the boiler room were killed instantly. Their bodies were recovered under concrete blocks. Five others were injured, two seriously with burns and fractures. They were taken to Edouard Herriot Hospital. One was in intensive care by afternoon.
The explosion triggered a small fire in adjacent storage. Chemicals did not leak, according to the prefecture, but as a precaution 80 workers from neighboring factories were evacuated. A perimeter of 200 meters was set up. Air monitoring was conducted. No toxic levels were found.
Inspectors said the boiler had passed its annual check in June. The company said pressure gauges were normal this morning. Workers said the safety valve had been acting up for a week. One said steam was venting louder than usual. Management said maintenance was scheduled for next week.
Lyon’s industrial zone has a history of incidents. In 2022, a similar boiler blast in Feyzin injured three. Labor inspectors have flagged aging equipment across the chemical corridor. Union representatives said companies delay replacements to save money. The company that owns this plant employs 120 people.
The public prosecutor opened an investigation for involuntary homicide and failure to ensure safety. Labor inspectors seized maintenance logs. The boiler manufacturer, based in Germany, said it would send engineers to examine the remains.
The factory owner said production would be halted for at least a week. He said families of the dead would be supported. Workers gathered outside the gate at noon, silent. Some cried. The plant siren kept wailing even after the fire was out.
By evening, the fire was extinguished but the building remained unstable. The two dead remained unidentified pending family notification. The five injured were stable.
