Indonesia’s Digital Economy Moves Deeper Into AI and Cloud Technology as Infrastructure Becomes the New Foundation

Indonesia’s digital transformation is increasingly moving beyond smartphones and online services. Behind the applications people use each day, a much larger technological landscape is taking shape, built from cloud systems, artificial intelligence, data centers, connectivity, and computing infrastructure.

The Indonesian government has identified artificial intelligence and data centers as important foundations for developing the national digital economy. According to ANTARA, the government is seeking to strengthen the AI ecosystem and digital infrastructure as technology becomes more closely connected with future economic growth.

The shift is visible in the growing use of AI across Indonesian workplaces and businesses. Data cited by ANTARA indicates that revenue from AI-powered applications in Indonesia grew 127% year on year in the first half of 2025, reflecting increasing commercial interest in the technology.

Cloud computing forms another important layer. Businesses can use cloud infrastructure to store information, operate applications, process data, and scale digital services without necessarily maintaining all computing resources themselves. As more services move online, reliable computing capacity becomes increasingly important.

Data centers sit at the center of this ecosystem. They provide the physical infrastructure needed to operate cloud platforms, AI systems, digital services, and other technology applications. Their development therefore connects the digital economy with physical requirements such as electricity, cooling systems, networks, and land.

The government has also described data centers as one of the potential levers for achieving stronger economic growth. The reasoning is straightforward: advanced digital services require reliable infrastructure, while stronger digital infrastructure can support businesses seeking to expand technology-based operations.

Yet the transformation is not simply about building more facilities. Indonesia also needs people capable of designing, operating, securing, and developing these systems. Skills in AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, data management, and digital engineering will become increasingly important as infrastructure expands.

The opportunities are therefore spread across several layers of the economy. Large technology companies may build infrastructure, financial institutions can expand digital services, manufacturers can automate processes, and smaller businesses can use AI and cloud tools to improve productivity. The scale of adoption will depend on accessibility and practical value.

Indonesia’s digital economy is still developing, but its direction is increasingly visible. Beneath the applications and services seen on screens, a deeper network of computing infrastructure is being built. AI, cloud technology, and data centers are gradually becoming part of the country’s economic landscape, linking technology investment with the wider question of future growth.
