Twenty-one opposition parties in India’s INDIA bloc held a mock parliamentary impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi on Saturday. Presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, the event adopted a resolution accusing the election chief of manipulating voter rolls and compromising the Election Commission’s independence. Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge called for Kumar’s removal and accused him of treason. The charges relate in part to a voter-roll revision exercise. The symbolic proceedings have no legal effect; the bloc plans further protests
