India’s Trade Minister Piyush Goyal is set to visit Canada with a delegation of approximately 150 business leaders as part of efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two nations. Scheduled from May 25 to May 27, 2026, the visit emphasizes a renewed commitment to bilateral trade and investment.
During the trip, Goyal plans to engage with Canadian ministers and business representatives in Ottawa and Toronto. Key topics will include discussions on a free trade agreement (FTA) that covers sectors such as energy, critical minerals, textiles, and leather. Goyal expressed optimism about creating opportunities for Indian industries as well as enhancing cooperation in areas like technology, food processing, and clean energy.
The trade minister highlighted that Canada is seen as a crucial partner for India's electric vehicle and energy transition plans, particularly in securing supply chains for critical minerals. He noted that both countries are aiming to boost bilateral trade to $50 billion over the next five years, seeking to increase Canadian investments in India, which currently amount to nearly $100 billion.
Both governments aim to raise the number of Canadian enterprises operating in India from about 600 to 1,000. Goyal's visit follows up on discussions held during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India earlier this year, where both sides agreed to advance negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The next round of CEPA negotiations is scheduled for July, as both countries work towards finalizing a balanced agreement by the end of the year.
Through this visit, India and Canada reinforce their commitments to close economic cooperation, enhancing partnerships across various sectors and fostering people-to-people ties.
