India Joins US-Led ‘Pax Silica’ Alliance to Strengthen AI and Critical Minerals Supply Chains

On February 20, 2026, India officially joined the Pax Silica initiative, a US-led strategic alliance designed to create a secure and resilient supply chain for critical minerals, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. The signing of the declaration took place during the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, attended by key figures including Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw and US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg.

Pax Silica aims to establish an innovation-driven supply chain that encompasses all aspects of the "silicon stack," from raw materials and mineral processing to semiconductor manufacturing and AI infrastructure. The coalition was initially launched in December 2025, including several countries such as Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, but India was not part of the original group. This recent decision highlights India's strategic importance and growing capabilities in technology.

Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that India is set to play a crucial role in the global semiconductor sector, with 10 new semiconductor fabrication plants already in development and advancements in chip design capabilities. He noted that engineers in India are already designing 2-nanometer chips, signifying a competitive edge in this critical sector.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor hailed India’s participation as vital, framing it as part of a larger strategy to ensure that technological advancements are driven by free societies rather than coercive dependencies. He asserted that the coalition fosters trusted industrial partnerships, which are crucial for global economic security.

The initiative is also seen as a response to geopolitical tensions, particularly concerning China’s prominence in high-tech and critical supply chains. By fostering strong alliances, Pax Silica aims to enhance resilience against potential disruptions while promoting collaborative innovation among member nations.

As India integrates into this strategic framework, both nations are poised to achieve substantial tech collaboration that positions them advantageously in the rapidly evolving global technology landscape. The partnership is expected to facilitate not only supply chain security but also significant economic growth through technological advancements and job creation.
