India’s government has capped trade margins at 30% for 137 additional cancer medicines after Supreme Court judges criticized steep price mark-ups as “extortion.” The Department of Pharmaceuticals says the new limit takes effect next month and could reduce prices by as much as 70%. The cap is expected to save patients 25 billion rupees annually. The measure extends a cap applied to 42 cancer drugs. The court cited a medicine bought by hospitals for 2,700 rupees but sold for 27,000.
