Ukraine accuses SpaceX of limiting Starlink service for military drones without warning, raising suspicions of retaliation linked to Trump administration pressure on Kyiv.

In Ukraine, a Connection Was Lost Without a Word

There is a particular vulnerability that comes with depending on a single thread of connection—a satellite signal that carries commands across the sky, guiding drones and coordinating soldiers who have no other way to speak to one another. When that thread is pulled, even slightly, the consequences ripple outward in ways that are not immediately visible but deeply felt. In Ukraine this week, that thread was pulled without warning, and the suspicion that followed has deepened an already widening rift between Kyiv and Washington.

Ukrainian military officials said Wednesday that SpaceX, Elon Musk’s aerospace company, had imposed restrictions on Starlink terminals without prior notice, effectively disabling their use as guidance systems for drones . Presidential adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov wrote on Telegram that the limitations affected terminals moving at speeds above 160 kilometers per hour, interrupting several military missions . Ukraine’s 7th Rapid Reaction Corps confirmed to Reuters that connections were dropping for ten to twenty seconds at speeds as low as 110 to 120 kilometers per hour .

The restrictions came as Russian missiles struck Ukrainian power stations in attacks that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called “ostentatious disrespect” toward President Donald Trump, who had recently announced a purported energy ceasefire that Russia appeared to ignore . Rescue workers in Kyiv pulled injured civilians from the wreckage of a residential building, and some 600,000 people were left without power as missiles targeted energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv .

The timing of the Starlink restrictions has drawn scrutiny. Kyiv’s relationship with Washington has deteriorated sharply since Trump lifted sanctions on Russian diesel and publicly criticized Zelenskyy, calling on Ukraine to halt attacks on Russian refineries and suggesting Ukrainians should replace their wartime leader . Sources told Reuters that the U.S. had threatened to cut off intelligence for early warning of missile strikes to pressure Kyiv on the refinery attacks .

Poland, which pays for Ukraine’s Starlink subscriptions, responded sharply. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski asked Musk on X: “Hey, @elonmusk, big man, are you playing politics with your products again? As your European customers, we are watching you” . Musk did not respond immediately. He has previously called Sikorski a “small man” .

SpaceX did not comment on the restrictions. The company has not publicly explained its decision. Ukrainian officials have suggested the move could be tied to pressure from the Trump administration, though no direct evidence has emerged linking the White House to the restrictions . The Ukrainian military’s reliance on Starlink—for battlefield communications and drone guidance—makes any limitation a matter of operational significance, not merely technical inconvenience.

Since Starlink was activated over Ukraine in the early days of Russia’s invasion, it has been described as the “lifeblood” of Ukrainian battlefield communications, resistant to electronic jamming and essential for long-range drone operations . A source in Ukraine’s defense ministry said the limitations significantly complicate logistics and some drone operations .

For now, the restrictions remain in place, and the questions about who ordered them—and why—remain unanswered.
