In Toukley, a Dog Was Taken and a Community Responded

There is a bond between a person and a dog that resists easy description—a companionship built on trust, on the small daily rituals of feeding and walking, on the silent understanding that one will protect the other. For Tania Gorry, that bond was broken on a Tuesday morning at Toukley foreshore on the New South Wales Central Coast. She was walking her three-year-old toy poodle, Bella, when a stranger grabbed the dog, locked himself in a car with her, and allegedly attacked the animal with a violence that has left Bella with a fractured jaw, a haematoma to her eye, and injuries consistent with strangulation.

Gorry, 58, described the moment to ABC News. "I couldn't fight him, I just couldn't," she said. "I hung on for dear life but he got the lead out of my hands" . She suffered bruising and injuries to her hand, wrist, knee, ribs, and abdomen during the ordeal. But her focus, she said, remains on Bella.

Police arrived to find the man inside the vehicle, allegedly attacking the dog and refusing to comply with their directions. Officers smashed the front windows of the car, deployed Tasers and OC spray, and arrested him. Four officers were taken to hospital for lacerations to their arms and hands. The 44-year-old man, identified as Daniel Galea of Penrith, was taken to Wyong Hospital under police guard and has since been charged with 14 offences, including aggravated cruelty upon an animal, robbery, resisting and assaulting police officers, attempting to drive under the influence of drugs, and possessing a prohibited weapon .

Bella was rushed to a veterinary clinic, where she spent three days in intensive care. Vets concluded she had been strangled. The surgery to repair her fractured jaw and the treatment for her eye haematoma have left Gorry facing a vet bill likely to exceed $18,000. A social media fundraising campaign reached its target in a matter of days—an outpouring of support that Gorry described as overwhelming .

The dog is now home, being fed through a tube as she recovers. "I'm just so grateful to God that she's alive," Gorry said .

Galea faced a bail court hearing on Friday and will undergo a mental health assessment. The charges against him include robbery, which under New South Wales law can carry significant penalties, as well as the animal cruelty offences. Four police officers were injured during the arrest, adding to the gravity of the case.

The incident has left Gorry traumatized, not only by the attack itself but by the vulnerability it exposed—the suddenness with which a peaceful morning walk can become a scene of violence. She has said she is grateful for the donations and the messages of support. But the fear, like the bruises, will take time to fade. For now, Bella is home, and Gorry is watching over her, grateful for a life that was almost taken and determined to see it restored.
