On a cold January morning in Coleraine, the discovery of Wayne Reid’s lifeless body in Society Court sent ripples through the tight-knit community of County Londonderry — and in the days since, those ripples have turned into concerted efforts by investigators to piece together what happened. Mr Reid, a 43-year-old father, was found dead at an address in the Society Court area on 12 January, and police believe he may have been involved in an altercation in the community between 8 and 10 January.

Since then, eight people in total have now been arrested on suspicion of murder. On Friday, officers detained three suspects — two women aged 39 and 33, and a 41-year-old man. A 19-year-old woman was added to the list of those held on Saturday, and additional individuals — including women aged 45 and 38 and a 33-year-old man — remain in custody as inquiries continue.

To assist with the ongoing investigation, detectives were granted an extra 36 hours by the courts to continue questioning three of the suspects. Police emphasised that the extension reflects the evolving nature of the case and the careful approach needed to examine all lines of inquiry.

One of the men arrested earlier in the probe has since been charged with Mr Reid’s murder and is due to appear in court, while others remain detained as officers from the PSNI Major Investigation Team work “at pace” to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death.

The investigation has also prompted appeals for information from the public, particularly anyone who may have been in the Society Court or Society Street areas during the crucial days before Mr Reid’s body was found. Police have renewed calls for witnesses to come forward with any details — no matter how small — that might assist detectives.

For many in Coleraine, the focus is not just on custody figures or court timetables, but on the quiet grief of a community and a family looking for clarity and closure. As the legal and investigative processes unfold, the hope remains that each new development — including further arrests and forensic inquiries — will bring them closer to understanding how and why this tragic loss occurred.
