This faint cosmic ghost is tentatively named Candidate Dark Galaxy-2 (CDG-2), and what makes it remarkable is not only its scarcity of stars but its overwhelming reliance on the unseen. While most galaxies are luminous tapestries woven with billions of stars, CDG-2 bears the whisper of only about six million suns’ worth of light — and nearly all of its mass comes from something we cannot see: dark matter. Maps derived from the combined telescope observations suggest that roughly 99% of its total mass is dark matter, with ordinary matter — the stars and clusters we can detect — making up only the slightest thread in its structure.

Dark matter itself remains one of astronomy’s great enigmas. Though it neither emits nor absorbs light, its presence is inferred through gravity’s subtle tug on galaxies and cosmic structures. In our own Milky Way, dark matter is thought to envelop the galaxy in a halo that guides the motion of stars. But in CDG-2, dark matter is the very essence of the galaxy — a near-pure embodiment of the invisible. Its discovery marks one of the first times astronomers have confirmed a galaxy almost entirely devoid of visible stars, one discovered not by its light but by the clues left in its gentle gravitational embrace.

The existence of such a ghostly galaxy offers both challenge and opportunity. It invites astronomers to refine their models of how galaxies form and evolve and to consider how much of the universe’s structure lies in realms we have scarcely begun to observe. When we peer into the night sky, shimmering with stars, we may now also ponder the shadows that underlie them — silent, immense, and filled with unknowns.
