In the Quiet After the Cry: A Father’s Memory and the Fragile Silence Around a Child’s Final Hours

There are moments in a household that seem to slip quietly past the edges of ordinary life — the low hum of a television, the shifting rhythm of children playing, the soft weight of evening settling over a room. In such moments, sound can feel small and fleeting. A thud. A murmur. A breath drawn in the dark.

It was within the quiet of an ordinary afternoon in South Auckland that a sound would later return in memory again and again.

During a coronial inquest examining the death of 10-month-old Poseidyn Hemopo-Pickering, his father described hearing his son “gasping for air,” a moment that now sits at the center of a tragedy still searching for clarity. The hearing, held in Auckland, is part of a long effort to understand how the infant came to suffer catastrophic injuries in September 2020.

Poseidyn had been living with his parents in Manurewa, a suburb in the southern reaches of the city. On the evening of September 5, 2020, emergency responders were called to the family home after the baby was found unresponsive. He was rushed first to Middlemore Hospital and later transferred to Starship Children’s Hospital. Despite intensive care, he died several hours later.

The inquest, which began years after the event, follows a criminal trial in 2022 where the child’s father, Anthony Simon Pickering, was acquitted of murder. The role of the coroner’s inquiry is different from that of the courtroom trial that preceded it. Rather than determining guilt or innocence, the inquiry seeks to understand the circumstances of the child’s death and the sequence of events that led to it.

As testimony unfolded, fragments of the family’s past emerged, offering glimpses into a life shaped by conflict, uncertainty, and instability. The child’s mother described a strained relationship between the couple, saying arguments and domestic tensions had become part of daily life. She also told the court that both she and Pickering had struggled with methamphetamine use during the period surrounding Poseidyn’s birth.

Against this complicated backdrop, the hours before the baby’s collapse have remained difficult to reconstruct with certainty.

Medical experts told the inquiry that Poseidyn suffered devastating head injuries. According to doctors who treated him, the damage was so severe that it would typically be associated with an extremely high-force impact. The injuries, they said, did not align with the explanation that the child had merely fallen and struck his head on a window sill.

Inside the hospital, the medical team worked through the night to stabilize the infant. Surgeons attempted to relieve the pressure building within his skull, but the trauma had already taken a profound toll. By the following morning, Poseidyn was declared brain dead.

The coroner’s proceedings have also heard about conflicting accounts provided to police in the days and months after the child’s death. The baby’s mother acknowledged that some earlier statements were inconsistent, telling the court that her memory and thinking had been clouded at the time.

Now, years later, the inquest continues its careful examination of testimony, medical evidence, and recollections from those closest to the infant. Each account forms part of a broader effort to understand what occurred in the small window of time before Poseidyn’s final journey to the hospital.

The inquiry is expected to continue hearing evidence as the coroner works to determine the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and whether any recommendations should follow.
