In the Eye of Matmo: Lives Moved Before the Storm Arrives

There is a tension in the hours before a storm: calm that tastes of tension, skies that darken without warning, and people packing what they can into memory. In southern China, that tension became movement. Over 150,000 residents in Guangdong province were ordered to relocate, as Typhoon Matmo gathered strength and approached land.

China’s meteorological and emergency response authorities raised the alert to red, the highest level in their system, and activated top-tier emergency measures. Officials cited projections of sustained winds reaching 151 kph and heavy rainfall. In Guangdong alone, more than 151,300 people had been relocated, including nearly 10,000 from maritime zones. Local governments deployed thousands of emergency workers in preparation.

Neighboring Hainan province, also in Matmo’s path, instituted travel suspensions, grounded flights, shut down transport networks, and closed businesses. Some cities preemptively canceled classes and halted public services, bracing for impact.

As storm models trace its course, Matmo is forecast to make landfall around midday in the coastal region spanning Guangdong and Hainan. Rainfall estimates range from 100 to 249 mm in many areas, with potential for flooding, landslides, and coastal inundation. ([AP News][3])

Evacuation is never merely physical. For those moving inland, it is a gesture of survival, of choosing uncertainty over staying. Entire communities scramble to protect livestock, move vehicles, secure homes. Roads get congested, emergency shelters open, relief teams stand by. In some coastal towns, the sea itself tempts disregard — until it does not.

Authorities also shut highways, suspended maritime traffic, and imposed curfews in vulnerable zones. Infrastructure systems—power lines, drainage, flood control—are on heightened alert. Communication lines, too, prepare for the strain.

There is no certainty in storms. There is only preparation and hope, that the precautions hold, that the wind spares less than feared, that the water recedes. In the hours ahead, the evacuated may wait, watch, listen for signals of return.

China has evacuated over 150,000 people in Guangdong province as Typhoon Matmo approaches. A red alert has been issued, flights and transport in Hainan suspended, and emergency response mobilized. The storm is expected to make landfall midday, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to southern China.
