In Hyde Park, an Alleged Assault Has Upended the Quiet

There is a particular unease that settles over a campus when the sounds of a Saturday night party give way to police sirens and the quiet aftermath of something broken. The University of Chicago, with its Gothic towers and its reputation for intellectual rigor, has long stood somewhat apart from the social rituals of Greek life—fraternities are not even officially recognized student organizations there. Yet this week, a reported assault at an off-campus fraternity house has placed the university at the center of a national reckoning that has already touched Cornell and other elite campuses.

A 21-year-old woman who is not a University of Chicago student reported that she was sexually assaulted early Sunday morning during a party at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house on South University Avenue in Hyde Park . The assault allegedly occurred in a bathroom after the woman, who had been dancing and drinking, began feeling unwell . According to a Chicago Police Department report, a group of three to five men stood outside the bathroom door, “cheering and appearing to encourage the activity inside” .

Two friends of the woman told police they intervened after being blocked from entering the bathroom. One friend was grabbed by the hair as the other picked the lock, according to the report. Inside, they found the woman “not fully conscious” and partially undressed alongside a man who was also partially undressed. When confronted, the man reportedly said everything was “cool,” as though nothing had occurred .

The woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment . On Tuesday, the university issued a community alert stating that a “person of interest” had been identified—someone not affiliated with the university—and that the person had been barred from campus. The identification was corroborated by witness statements and video evidence from university cameras and license plate readers, according to the alert .

The Alpha Epsilon Pi chapter said it was “deeply disturbed” by the incident and stated that “to the best of our knowledge, no one affiliated with AEPi was involved or complicit” . The fraternity’s national organization instructed the chapter to halt all events and programming pending the investigation . The university emphasized that while fraternities are not recognized student organizations, all students remain subject to university disciplinary procedures .

The reported assault comes amid heightened national attention to sexual violence in fraternity settings. A separate investigation into an alleged gang rape at a Cornell University fraternity house in 2024 has fueled protests and scrutiny of how universities handle such cases . At the University of Chicago, students expressed a mix of shock and frustration. “I think it’s really sobering when it happens on your own campus,” one graduate student told reporters . Another noted the proximity to the Cornell case: “It just feels kind of like ultra wrong right now” .

Chicago police continue to investigate, and no charges have been filed. The university has said it is committed to addressing sexual misconduct and imposing disciplinary consequences as warranted .
