In Athens, Four American Travelers Became Part of a Tragedy Still Under Investigation.

In the narrow streets of Athens’ historic Plaka district, a family holiday ended in a tragedy that crossed oceans. Four Americans were among six people killed when a two-story building collapsed after an explosion on September 25. The victims included newlyweds from New York, the bride’s brother and his pregnant wife, according to reports identifying those who died.

The newly married couple were identified as Florida Hoxha, 34, and Ian Alexander Kirkpatrick, 37. They had been traveling in Greece for their honeymoon. Florida’s brother, Florin Hoxha, 36, was also killed, along with his wife, Eris Cani, who was reported to be pregnant. The four were staying in a short-term rental in the building.

The explosion occurred in the morning in Plaka, one of Athens’ best-known historic and tourist districts near the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus. The force of the blast destroyed the two-story structure and damaged nearby homes, shops and vehicles, scattering debris across surrounding streets.

Emergency crews worked through the remains of the building using search dogs, cameras and other equipment. The six victims were eventually recovered from the rubble. Two women trapped in a neighboring building were rescued and taken to hospital, while another person was reported injured in the initial incident.

At the time of the explosion, the American travelers had been expected to leave Greece that day. Reuters reported that the two couples had been scheduled to catch a flight from Athens airport but did not arrive. The timing made the tragedy particularly poignant for relatives and friends who had expected the trip to end with a journey home.

The victims' lives extended well beyond the circumstances of their deaths. Reports described Florida Hoxha as a lawyer who worked on issues affecting immigrants and as someone who had ambitions for public service. Kirkpatrick worked in finance, while Florin Hoxha was involved in real estate and construction. Eris Cani was reported to have worked in pharmacy and medicine.

Greek authorities began investigating the cause of the explosion. Early attention focused on a possible gas-related problem, including reports of a gas smell, but officials were examining the site to determine precisely what caused the blast. The investigation therefore remains important not only for determining responsibility but also for understanding how the building came to collapse so quickly.

Six lives were ultimately lost in the incident, including the four Americans and an older couple who lived in the building. As investigators continue examining the cause, families are left with the more personal work of remembering people through the lives they lived rather than the circumstances that ended them. In Athens, the investigation continues amid a neighborhood now carrying the memory of an ordinary morning that suddenly became a devastating one.
