In a Calgary courtroom, the unspeakable arrived in the language of procedure

Courtrooms are places where the unspeakable is translated into procedure. On Friday, in a Calgary courtroom, the details that emerged were of a kind that resist easy summary—human remains found in storage containers, a condo described as a hoarding situation, a man who spoke of Armageddon and called himself the king of Canada. Michael Lee, 49, and his wife Helen Lee, 50, each face a charge of indignity to a human body, and the proceedings offered a glimpse into a tragedy that had been unfolding quietly, behind closed doors, until police arrived for a welfare check.

The charges stem from events between October 23 and October 27, according to court documents, which allege the couple "improperly or indecently interfered" with human remains "through storage in containers." Earlier this week, Calgary police attended the Lees' home in the northeast community of Skyview Ranch to conduct a welfare check. During a search of the condo, officers found human remains in two bins. The couple had been living with the woman whose remains were discovered, a forensic psychiatrist told the court .

Dr. Ken Hashman expressed "significant concerns" about Michael Lee's mental fitness, describing potential psychotic disorder, impaired grasp of reality, delusions, and hallucinations. He told the court that Michael had spoken of a nuclear war five years ago, of the sky being "different now," and of being "God's steward." When asked about Armageddon, Michael said everyone would be tortured to death and sent to hell. He also told the courtroom that he is the "king of Canada" .

Justice Van de Veen ordered a 30-day psychiatric assessment at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre to determine whether Michael is fit to stand trial. Helen Lee, represented by duty counsel, was not flagged for fitness concerns by Hashman and will return to court next week. Both remain in custody. The identity of the deceased and the circumstances of her death have not been released, with autopsy results pending .

There is a difficult compassion required in reading such a story. The allegations describe acts that are, on their face, a profound violation of the dignity owed to the dead. And yet the courtroom also heard of a man who may be profoundly unwell, living in a space so cluttered that only a narrow aisle allowed passage, speaking of skies that had changed and a world on the verge of ending. These are not explanations, and they are not excuses. They are the fragmented pieces of a human situation that the law will now attempt to parse.

The case will proceed slowly, as such cases do. The psychiatric assessment will conclude at the end of November. Helen Lee will appear again next week. The autopsy results may bring clarity, or they may deepen the questions. What is already visible is a tragedy with multiple layers—a person whose life ended in circumstances that remain unclear, a couple whose capacity to account for themselves is now a matter for medical and legal determination, and a community in Calgary's northeast trying to understand what happened in a condo that looked, from the outside, like any other.
