If the Pathway Works, Why Does It Still Feel Like a Gift?

There is a particular joy in watching a hometown kid make good—a story that feels less like a transaction and more like a promise kept. Toronto FC signed 18-year-old midfielder Antone Bossenberry Romero to a First Team contract as a Homegrown Player on Tuesday, a deal that runs through the 2028-29 MLS season with club options for 2029-30 and 2030-31 .

Bossenberry becomes the 39th player in club history to sign for the First Team from the Toronto FC Academy, a pathway that has become the club’s quiet engine . The Toronto native joined the academy in August 2022 and progressed through the U-15, U-17, and U-18 age groups before signing his first professional contract with TFC II in October 2025 .

His numbers at the developmental level speak to steady growth: four goals and two assists in 33 appearances for Toronto FC II across the 2025 and 2026 seasons in MLS NEXT Pro . He made his TFC II debut on March 13, 2025, against Chicago Fire FC II, and scored his first goal—a game-winner in the 80th minute—against Orlando City B on June 25, 2025 .

The first-team experience came sooner than many expected. Bossenberry made his MLS debut on April 25, 2026, against Atlanta United after receiving a short-term call-up, and made two additional appearances through similar agreements, including a Canadian Championship match against Atlético Ottawa on May 5, 2026 . General Manager Jason Hernandez said Bossenberry “has accelerated through our pathway after a strong First Team experience this preseason” .

On the international stage, Bossenberry has represented Canada at multiple youth levels. He was part of the Canadian squad for the 2025 Concacaf U-17 Men’s Qualifiers, helping Canada win its group and qualify for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. Most recently, he played for Canada at the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Men’s Championship in Mexico . The Guardian named him among the 60 best young football talents in the world in October 2025 .

For a club that has often looked outward for solutions, the signing is a reminder of what can be built from within. Bossenberry’s path—from the academy fields to short-term agreements to a multi-year deal—is the kind of story that gives a fan base something to believe in beyond the scoreboard. The contract was completed before the October 9 roster freeze, ensuring he will be part of the club’s plans through the end of the decade .

Toronto FC announced the signing Tuesday. Bossenberry, 18, is a midfielder who stands 5-foot-9 and weighs 150 pounds. He holds Canadian and Mexican nationality. The contract runs through 2028-29 with club options for two additional seasons.
