If Four Were Left, Why Did Only Two Survive?

There is a particular kind of cruelty that arrives without noise, wrapped in something ordinary and left where no one is meant to look. On Sunday night in Addlestone, a town in Surrey, England, a man walking his dog at about 10 p.m. discovered a plastic bag that should not have been moving. Inside were four kittens, roughly five weeks old. Two had already died. The two who survived—ginger brothers now called Peanut and Butter—were taken to a veterinarian and then to Byfleet Cat Rescue, where they are being fostered until they are old enough to find permanent homes .

Nicola Tait, the founder of the rescue charity, told BBC Radio Surrey that she was “absolutely shocked” when she learned what had happened. “The kittens had no chance,” she said. She noted that the charity would normally have been asked about kittens of this age, suggesting that the person who abandoned them had other options and chose not to use them . Tait said the two survivors are doing well now, playing and recovering, though Butter was a little quiet at first .

The kittens will stay in foster care until they are eight to ten weeks old, at which point Byfleet Cat Rescue will begin the process of finding them a permanent home. Tait said the charity has had a busy summer, taking in 90 cats, and that it will “always try and help where we can” . In September, the rescue center backed a petition calling for solutions to what it described as a “rapidly escalating animal welfare crisis” across the United Kingdom .

The broader context is not encouraging. Cats’ Protection, a national charity, said in its most recent annual report that it took in around 7,000 stray and abandoned cats in 2025, while adoption rates have dropped in recent years . The numbers suggest that incidents like the one in Addlestone are not isolated aberrations but symptoms of a system under strain—a system in which animals become the collateral damage of human decisions, economic pressures, and, sometimes, simple indifference.

Cases like this one recur with a frequency that is difficult to track but easy to recognize. In April, a woman in Sydney found two newborn kittens in a tied-up plastic bag in bushland; one later died . In June 2024, two kittens were found in a sealed bag on a beach in Penzance, Cornwall . In May 2025, two kittens were rescued from a tied-up bag along a roadside in Craven County, North Carolina . Each case is its own story, but together they form a pattern: animals discarded as if they were refuse, left to die in places where discovery is a matter of chance.

The two kittens in Addlestone were discovered because someone happened to be walking a dog at the right time in the right place. Peanut and Butter will not remember what happened to them—they are too young for memory to hold such things. But the question of how they came to be in that bag, and who put them there, remains unanswered. Surrey Police have not announced an investigation, and Byfleet Cat Rescue has not indicated whether any information about the person responsible has emerged.

Byfleet Cat Rescue is caring for the two surviving kittens until they are ready for adoption. The charity continues to accept donations and support for its work. No arrests have been reported in connection with the abandonment.
