Ice-Covered Highway Carnage in Canada: Multi-Car Collision Near Ontario Leaves Two Dead, Six Injured

Thunder Bay, Canada— A multi-car collision on an ice-covered highway in northern Ontario left two people dead and six hospitalized on October 20, after freezing rain turned a stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway into a sheet of black ice.

The pileup happened at around 8 a.m. on Highway 11-17 near Nipigon, east of Thunder Bay. Temperatures had dropped overnight. Freezing rain coated the road. Drivers said they did not see the ice. One car spun out. Others braked and slid. Within minutes, at least six vehicles, including two SUVs and a pickup truck, were tangled across both lanes. One vehicle rolled into a ditch.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Ontario Provincial Police said both were in the same vehicle that was struck from behind. Six others were taken to hospitals in Nipigon and Thunder Bay with fractures, hypothermia, and head injuries. Two are in critical condition. Paramedics said extrication was difficult because doors were jammed by ice and twisted metal.

Witnesses said the road was like a skating rink. "You could not stand up without slipping," said a truck driver who stopped to help. "Cars were sliding even after they had stopped." The Ministry of Transportation had issued a winter weather travel advisory, warning of icy conditions. Salt trucks had been dispatched, but the rain washed salt away faster than it could work.

Northern Ontario highways are dangerous in shoulder season. Daytime thaw and nighttime freeze create black ice that is invisible. The OPP said this stretch has seen multiple fatal crashes in similar conditions. Speed was a factor. Several drivers were traveling at highway speed despite the advisory. One officer said, "People think all-season tires are enough. They are not on black ice."

The highway was closed for more than six hours while police investigated and tow trucks removed wreckage. Traffic was rerouted onto a logging road. Drivers were told to avoid the area. The Ministry said it will increase patrols and consider temporary speed reductions when freezing rain is forecast. The coroner's office has been notified.

The victims have not been identified pending notification of next of kin. The OPP said alcohol is not suspected. The investigation will include examination of road maintenance logs and whether de-icing was adequate.

By afternoon, the ice had begun to melt. The road reopened. But police warned that conditions remain slippery after dark.
