Hungary Protests EU Move to Indefinitely Freeze Russian Assets, Orban Says

BUDAPEST — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Hungary is protesting what he described as an unlawful step by the European Union to indefinitely freeze Russian assets, citing the use of a qualified majority decision process.

Orban said Budapest objects both to the substance of the decision and to the procedure used to approve it, arguing that such measures should require unanimous consent among EU member states.

The EU’s move extends restrictions on Russian assets amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, with proceeds from frozen assets increasingly discussed as potential funding sources for related policy initiatives.

Hungary has repeatedly expressed reservations about EU sanctions mechanisms and decision-making processes, positioning itself as a dissenting voice within the bloc on Russia-related measures.

EU officials have not yet publicly responded to Orban’s remarks. Further discussions among member states are expected as legal and political debates over the asset freeze continue.
