Hundreds of Thousands May Be Living Undocumented in Britain

LONDON — Community leaders, overstayers, and immigration lawyers describe a growing and largely undocumented population living under the radar across the United Kingdom, with some estimates suggesting hundreds of thousands of people may be remaining in the country after their visas expire.

The Home Office has not released updated figures for more than five years, leaving officials unable to provide an accurate national estimate. Lawyers working on immigration cases say overstaying has become one of the most common issues they encounter.

One lawyer told reporters he believed the real number could range from 200,000 to 400,000 people, based on daily case volumes across immigration practices and the continued absence of formal exit controls.

In northwest London, individuals familiar with the situation say the problem has intensified since post-Brexit migration routes opened new opportunities for short-term entry, with some arrivals reportedly planning to work informally after their visas expire. Local residents describe parts of the area as having transformed rapidly in recent years.

Several overstayers interviewed say they live in constant fear of detection but remain in the UK due to economic needs, family obligations, or concerns about returning to their home countries. Some report working cash-in-hand jobs in construction, cleaning, and domestic labor for as little as £50 a day.

Others, like a woman from Nigeria who has lived in the UK for 12 years, say they became undocumented while caring for sick family members and now face repeated refusals for leave to remain. She reports monthly digital check-ins with immigration officials while awaiting a final decision.

Community members also report cases of individuals paying third parties to pose as relatives in order to obtain visitor visas, describing the practice as widespread and difficult for authorities to detect.

Critics say the lack of updated data, limited enforcement capabilities, and complex legal pathways have created an environment where overstaying can go unnoticed for years. Some local residents characterize the UK as an easy place to remain undocumented, citing low detection risk.

A spokesperson for the Home Office said the government is intensifying enforcement efforts, noting increases in arrests, workplace raids, and removals of individuals with no legal right to stay. Officials said more than 35,000 people had been removed in the past year, describing the system as focused on preventing abuse and strengthening compliance.
