Huge Oil Spill Off the Coast of Oman Expands Sharply, Now Covering Dozens of Square Miles

An oil spill from a grounded tanker off Oman is expanding rapidly, with satellite imagery reviewed by experts showing it has reached roughly 150 square kilometers (about 58 square miles). Earlier images suggested a much smaller area, around 20 square kilometers. Environmental groups say the sheen has spread toward Qibliyah Island and into surrounding waters, affecting wildlife in a marine protected reserve. The tanker has been stranded since June, and authorities are pushing for removal of ship and cargo.
